The “HOUSE”© project

The Proposal

HOUSE is a two-phase project currently in progress. In the first stage, it will be an anthology to be published and made available to the public in early 2007. In the second stage it will be a live performance. Although some submissions will overlap, some submissions will only be accepted for the HOUSE anthology, and some submissions will only be accepted for the HOUSE live performance. Thus, the live performance and the anthology will not be identical.

The anthology and the live performance challenge authors to consider the question “what is a house?” but from two slightly different angles:

1. The anthology challenges authors to write a strong narrative piece (fiction or non-fiction) set in a particular room in a house, or revolving around the concept of a house, with at least one strong central character of a particular age. Setting and age are essential in the story because, as a house contains different rooms, so does a life contain different stages. There is no limit to the length of the submitted piece. The project is organic, with the editor influencing the final editing so that the various pieces form a whole. The aim is that when a reader has finished the anthology, he/she will have the impression that they have read one connecting narrative, even though the characters and the settings have changed.

2. The live performance piece must take place in one room of a house. The room must have some relevance to the piece of writing. The character (s) must be of a particular age, and their age, and the problem or challenge that they face, must be relevant to what is going on in the piece. (i.e. - we all face different challenges at different ages of our life or handle stages differently as to houses. Houses and their various rooms are witness to the lives of people. ) HOUSE is broken up into 9 performances of approximately 5 minutes duration apiece. Each performance represents a stage of life. The performances in the first half of HOUSE represent the ages 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. The performances of the second half of HOUSE represent the ages 60, 70, 80, and 90.

3. All other aspects of the HOUSE project will remain secret until the anthology is released and the live performance is in preparation.

4. For the second phase of HOUSE, we are looking for:

  • Actors and actresses interested in performing the various pieces
  • Artists interested in interpreting the various rooms

If you are an artist, set designer, or performer interested in working on HOUSE, please register on our web site, make a request for the full details of the HOUSE project, and we will send you the project proposal.

I am a house
Built upon stone.
An ark in a sea
Of humanity.

Blood bone and skin and,
Mostly my mind,
Form the in-sides and outs of
The fortress of me.

I am a house.
Furnished with thoughts,
I burn with the fuel
Of creation.

I am a home
To the ones whom I love.
A shelter. A roof.
A foundation.

Status of the project

1. A call for submissions was made in late 2005 to members of the Creative Writing Forum Luxembourg (CWC) and to people whom the CWC considers “extended creative family”. Submissions for both the anthology and the live performances are now closed!
2. A first round of submissions was sent to the editor, accepted or rejected, and sent back to the authors for further editing.
3. Currently HOUSE is undergoing a final edit process and eventual publication by 2007.
4. The second phase of HOUSE involves an interdisciplinary performance with original written pieces performed by actors and actresses. The performances will take place in either an old house or chateau, or in a museum or art gallery that has enough small rooms to accommodate the various pieces of the performance.
5. At this time, HOUSE is making a call for actors and actresses to perform the pieces, or artists to assist in interpreting the various rooms for the live performances. If you are interested in participating in HOUSE, please contact us and we will send you the full details of the project and the terms and conditions.

The HOUSE©project is an individual project entirely owned by Mary Carey.
