Celeste Koehler began writing in 1996 after
she left the US and a successful nursing
career to marry her Luxembourgish husband.
Overwhelmed by foreign languages, and feeling
ill-equipped and inadequate in her new home,
she turned to writing as a way of expression
and to remind herself that she was an intelligent
and educated woman. As Dorothy says, in
The Wizard of Oz, ‘you never really
appreciate your home until you leave it,’
and so it was for Celeste with the English
language. Through writing she can go home
again, and often does. In her own words,
‘I can go anywhere, do anything, be
anybody, and English is my passport.’
Celeste joined the CWC in 2003 and has been
stimulated and enriched by the experience.
She has written several short stories, participated
in the Art Echo project, and is currently
working on a novel.
