Dana Rufolo, a United States citizen, was
born in New York of Italian-American parents.She
grew up in La Jolla, California when not
out of the country with her parents who
taught at international American Schools.
She attended the University of California
at San Diego and received her B.A. in English
and American Literature. Her Masters and
Doctorate in Theatre Studies are from the
University of Wisconsin at Madison. She
has recently terminated the three years
of coursework to obtain a Masters of Science
degree in Art psychotherapy, with a specialization
in drama therapy. She teaches English Literature
and works as a therapist.
As a youth, Dana Rufolo received prizes
for, and published, poems, plays and essays.
Her adult career took off in Luxembourg,
the country of her residence since 1982
and the country where, along with her husband,
she has raised three children. Since 1991
she has presented book reviews in English
– the only English broadcast –
for the national radio station, Radio socio-culturelle
100,7 (www.100komma7.lu).
She is a senior European theatre critic
for Plays International, a magazine published
from London. Rufolo has authored several
academic articles on theatre research, and
literature. She has presented numerous conference
papers on theatre research and art therapy.

In 1998 Rufolo was awarded one of the Prix National
de la Littérature; the genre of the year
was the essay and her philosophical/social critical
essay The Forests of Luxembourg was published
by Phi Editions in 1999. Again in 2002, she received
a Prix National de la Littérature, this
time for a children’s play -- Mirror Lake
and Me-Me, a pun-filled surrealistic drama that
incorporates Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. Recently,
her science fiction radio play Little Green Men
was awarded a Multiple Languages literature prize
sponsored by the Goethe Institute, and it is now
in pre-production as a film script.
Rufolo’s short stories and poetry – always in the
English language -- have appeared recently in D’Wasser
am Mond (Binsfeld Press, 2004), GréngeSpoun (Luxembourg,
2000), Writing from A Small Country (iUniverse Press, 2004) and
Apetura Magazine (Luxembourg, 1999-2001). She was awarded first
place in Luxembourg’s Olympic Committee short story contest
in December, 2005. The International Olympics Committee in Lausanne,
Switzerland will publish the story in a special anthology to
be distributed at the upcoming Olympic games.
I Am Viola da Gamba of the Singing Building,
published in 2005 by Schortgen Press, is her first
book of poetry. This narrative poem is about a
viola da gamba that can be visited and admired
in the Conservatory of Music of Luxembourg city.

Dana Rufolo has been awarded a 2007 Year of Culture
grant by the Luxembourg government to produce
her play Hurt, Dignified – A Play about
Refugees at a theatre in Dudelange, Luxembourg
being especially built for the 2007 events. In
co-operation with Le Centre de Documentation sur
les Migrations Humaines, Hurt, Dignified will
travel to perform in Norway and Britain for their
