Dana Jeanne Rufolo-Hörhager – A Short Biography

Dana Rufolo, a United States citizen, was born in New York of Italian-American parents. She grew up in La Jolla, California when not out of the country with her parents who taught at international American Schools. She attended the University of California at San Diego and received her B.A. in English and American Literature. Her Masters and Doctorate in Theatre Studies are from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has recently terminated the three years of coursework to obtain a Masters of Science degree in Art psychotherapy, with a specialization in drama therapy. She teaches English Literature and works as a therapist.

As a youth, Dana Rufolo received prizes for, and published, poems, plays and essays. Her adult career took off in Luxembourg, the country of her residence since 1982 and the country where, along with her husband, she has raised three children. Since 1991 she has presented book reviews in English – the only English broadcast – for the national radio station, Radio socio-culturelle 100,7 (www.100komma7.lu). She is a senior European theatre critic for Plays International, a magazine published from London. Rufolo has authored several academic articles on theatre research, and literature. She has presented numerous conference papers on theatre research and art therapy.

In 1998 Rufolo was awarded one of the Prix National de la Littérature; the genre of the year was the essay and her philosophical/social critical essay The Forests of Luxembourg was published by Phi Editions in 1999. Again in 2002, she received a Prix National de la Littérature, this time for a children’s play -- Mirror Lake and Me-Me, a pun-filled surrealistic drama that incorporates Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. Recently, her science fiction radio play Little Green Men was awarded a Multiple Languages literature prize sponsored by the Goethe Institute, and it is now in pre-production as a film script.

Rufolo’s short stories and poetry – always in the English language -- have appeared recently in D’Wasser am Mond (Binsfeld Press, 2004), GréngeSpoun (Luxembourg, 2000), Writing from A Small Country (iUniverse Press, 2004) and Apetura Magazine (Luxembourg, 1999-2001). She was awarded first place in Luxembourg’s Olympic Committee short story contest in December, 2005. The International Olympics Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland will publish the story in a special anthology to be distributed at the upcoming Olympic games.

I Am Viola da Gamba of the Singing Building, published in 2005 by Schortgen Press, is her first book of poetry. This narrative poem is about a viola da gamba that can be visited and admired in the Conservatory of Music of Luxembourg city. The site www.schortgen.lu has an entry with more information and a photo of the cover of Rufolo’s book.

Dana Rufolo has been awarded a 2007 Year of Culture grant by the Luxembourg government to produce her play Hurt, Dignified – A Play about Refugees at a theatre in Dudelange, Luxembourg being especially built for the 2007 events. In co-operation with Le Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines, Hurt, Dignified will travel to perform in Norway and Britain for their years of culture 2008.
